One of the wonderful projects that has been in the pipeline over the last year is the Fishponds Community Garden with the aim of encouraging the physical and mental wellbeing of those in our community. You can sign up to our newsletter here.
The garden will have an emphasis on food growing with raised planting beds, transforming a redundant flower bed into a sensory garden, and saving an existing rose garden and shrub areas. The garden will include accessible footpaths for the mobility impaired, seating areas, as well as a host of green infrastructure features and pollinator-friendly planting to improve biodiversity.
This truly will be a community garden, consisting of multiple community groups coming together with the support of Kingston Council and the Council contractor,
Groups involved include the Friends of Fishponds Park, KingsGate Church, Elderberries, Good Gym and KCAH.
As we are starting this from the ground up (literally!) and there is a lot of work to be done. We will be holding weekly community sessions to develop and maintain the area, with the possibility of using the food grown for community lunches. This project will complement the adjacent community orchard that was planted in January 2020 and create an attractive feature with fantastic potential for community use.
We host ladies gardening sessions at Fishponds Park, using the space to connect and have fun gardening together. The sessions run on the first Wednesday of the month between 11:00h and 13:30h. Come to the Maybury Place entrance (KT5 9AL) and it's to the left of the path as you enter.
