Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C / 160C fan / Gas Mark 5.
  2. Wash and scrub the potatoes, peel if necessary and cut into bite sized pieces.
  3. Fill a large saucepan with water, put the potatoes in and boil for 20 minutes until tender.
  4. Whilst the potatoes are boiling, drain the tuna from the can and flake it into the oven proof dish so it forms a uniform layer.
  5. Drain the sweetcorn and add to the tuna. Add the peas too!
  6. Make the white sauce by melting 30g butter in a pan.
  7. Stir in 3 tablespoons of flour.
  8. When it starts to bubble gradually add the milk, then stir constantly for a few minutes until thickened.
  9. Season with salt and pepper.
  10. Once the sauce has thickened, spoon it over the tuna and sweetcorn mixture and mix it all together.
  11. Drain the potatoes using a colander, put back in the pan, add the remaining butter, a splash of milk and mash them using a masher or the back of a large spoon.
  12. Season with salt and pepper.
  13. Spoon the mash onto the top of the tuna, sauce and sweetcorn, level off the pattern with a fork.
  14. Add 75g grated cheese evenly across the top of the mash.
  15. Place in the oven and cook for 30 minutes or until the topping is golden.
  16. Remove from the oven and serve.
  17. Enjoy your Tuna Pie!
