BRITE Box at 5 — Celebrated at the House of Lords
From Lockdown Idea to House of Lords Celebration
Posted: 23/06/2025
This week marked an extraordinary milestone: five years of BRITE Box — and what better way to honour it than with a joyful, moving celebration at the House of Lords. From humble beginnings during the first COVID-19 lockdown, what began as a “mustard seed” of an idea has flourished into a vibrant, child-led, family-powered healthy eating initiative — now reaching over 1,000 families each week.
A Celebration at the House of Lords
The event was graciously hosted by Lord Syed Kamall, whose warmth and advocacy created the perfect atmosphere for an afternoon of recognition and reflection. The House of Lords reception room was filled with a wide array of guests: partners, public health leaders, franchise leads, volunteers, funders, school staff, families, and friends — all of whom have helped shape and sustain BRITE Box’s success.
Throughout the afternoon, a steady stream of Members of Parliament visited the gathering, offering their congratulations and learning more about this impactful community-rooted programme. Their presence demonstrated the growing cross-party interest in preventative, people-powered approaches to family health and wellbeing — and BRITE Box’s role as a leading example.
Children at the Heart
While the surroundings were grand, the highlight was simple and powerful: hearing directly from the children and young people who bring BRITE Box to life every week. Pupils from Heathmere Primary School, St. Richard’s CE Primary School, and Blossom House School Limited stood tall and proud as they shared what BRITE Box means to them.
Even more moving, they helped pack boxes live in the room — a beautiful reminder of the hands-on, grassroots spirit at the heart of the initiative. Their voices and actions brought everything into perspective and grounded the celebration in the lived experience of the young people it exists to serve.
A Panel of Passionate Leaders
The event also featured an inspiring panel discussion with public health experts and academic leaders who have followed BRITE Box’s progress closely. Pedro Delgado, Martha Earley, Hilda Mulrooney, and Mark Jordan offered reflections on the broader importance of food education, family empowerment, and prevention-first approaches to public health.
They spoke with clarity, urgency, and deep care — underlining that BRITE Box is not just a “nice-to-have,” but a critical intervention at a time when food insecurity, poor diet, and mental health pressures are affecting more children and families than ever.
Recognising the Champions Behind the Scenes
Behind every delivery, every recipe card, and every conversation is a team of deeply committed people. Special thanks absolutely have to go to Ronald Ranta, who has been working behind the scenes writing the fabulous three-year research report and championing the project at every turn.
Likewise, huge thanks to Ruth and Nick Dawson, who have led with such inspiration and passion over the last five years. Your belief in what’s possible has helped bring BRITE Box to life and sustain it through every stage.
Finally, one humungous thanks to the whole Voices of Hope UK staff team, who have worked tirelessly over the last six months to host such an exceptional afternoon — every detail was felt and appreciated.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Among the many voices shared, one parent’s words especially stood out:
“Prior to the BRITE Box my son ate very few vegetables and he had a very restrictive diet. Since receiving the BRITE Box, he has gradually tried more food, and his taste palette has changed and he actually will eat most vegetables without protesting. This is such a big win for us…We have good days and not so good days but when we recieve the BRITE Box, the actual process of cooking also helps with the emotional regulation of my child, and Friday evenings are usually calmer. My son feels so proud in his achievements and we have been able to create the meals at later dates without the BRITE box but the recipe cards included.
The BRITE Box is what we look forward to on Friday, we are very much appreciative of it and the hard work (behind the scenes that goes on in preparing the BRITE Box). Words cannot describe the positive impact the BRITE Box has had on us, we will be saddened when the BRITE Box experience finishes for us.”
These stories are the heartbeat of the project. They are why we continue, week after week — and why we believe the next five years must build on this momentum.
The Road Ahead
The success of BRITE Box is a testament to what’s possible when children lead, families are trusted, and communities come together with purpose. With growing interest across London and beyond, and with the support of local authorities, the NHS, schools, volunteers, and funders, BRITE Box is poised to expand its reach and deepen its impact.
To every child, parent, school, volunteer, delivery driver, funder, public health leader, MP, and community partner: THANK YOU. You’ve helped turn a hopeful idea into a living, thriving reality.
Here’s to the next five years — to growing stronger, dreaming bigger, and making healthy, joyful eating a reality for every family.
